LionKing Looks back

As I head towards my 60th I thought it was time to look back at a couple of games from the past a big one, a small one and an unusual one.

Everton.

goodisonI unusually went by train, as Arsenal were also playing away on the same day and leaving Euston at the same time we got given different coloured tickets so as not to get confused. We had 3 special trains whereas the BIG CLUB ARSENAL only had 2 as we arrived in Liverpool about 1000 handed. We weren't allowed to walk to the ground and thus we were forced by the police onto football special buses. As we rounded the first corner we were on the top deck and a brick came sailing through from the friendly scoucers. We knew we had arrived. One of my friends asked what do we do now, I said we hit the floor (well we couldn't get off so safety first). The bus carried on and dropped us at the wrong end. There was as expected a friendly reception, we were greatly out numbered so the 5 of us who had travelled decided to get in the ground as quick as we could. We ended up in the Everton main end. We said to one of the blokes with us who had a reputation for celebrating madly that if by some shock we should score to just stay still. The game kicked off and arry took a lot of stick. With 15 mins to go the expected happened, Everton scored but no the ref had seen something no one else had. We once again were able to dream of bringing them back to fortress Den and seek a bit of off the field revenge as well. Almost straight after we were awarded a free kick which Crips went up for it and scored with a diving header. I never knew he could score with his head so it was an even bigger shock. Our mate who normally goes mad was jumped on to restrain him. The response from the Everton seating area was to start throwing their cousins onto the pitch. A few mins later we added a second a powerful header into the roof of the net so there were even more coins hitting the pitch. The end of the game, the pitch was littered with coins. We made a quick exit, choosing to walk back to the station. It was that friendly we decided not to stay for a drink and returned to celebrate in the station bar at Euston. Happy days.

HALIFAX 4th division

shayAs usual we travelled by coach (Timpsons). We met as before at 7. The coach set off and as usual most of us had had a few from the night before so most of us were asleep. We made the usual stop at the café at the start of the M1. We also made our regular stop at Toddington and then it was non stop to Halifax for the big clash! We arrived about an hour before kick off. This game without doubt was the coldest I have had to endure. Forget Oldham, this is ice station zebra which was reflected in the crowd with the attendance being the lowest at a football league game that season with just a few over 1000 bothered (about 100 wall). We won the game but we couldn't see most of the game due to the huge speedway track. The other highlight was the arrival of hot pies just before half time. I also tasted Bovril for the first time. On returning to the coach, although it had it had been such a small gate it seemed that no one had paid due to knowing a player or someone else.

That's what following Millwall is all about great days.

Where do you start with an unusual one following Millwall they are nearly all unusual?

We travel to Bournemouth on a good Friday and then stay there over night before boarding the coach to travel to Swansea to arrive at 7. We spent the day by the sea, spent the afternoon watching the game there on the Saturday before travelling back over night to London. To think these over paid players think they play a lot of games. We arrived back in London at am Sunday without having had a change of clothes. No need to say that the smell on board wasn't the greatest but we had had a couple of beers so who cared. Many a good joke was shared by those on board. They don't make trips like this anymore!
