Glory Hunter? Me?

wem

You often hear comments on this site such as “Where have the 40,000 from Wembley gone” and “what happened to all those fans after the cup final”.  The insinuation is always that these people are free loaders and glory hunters.  Well I don’t agree.

Millwall is your life.  Once your part of its bloodline, you never remove yourself from it.  You can’t, it’s worse than gambling, smoking, drinking or any other addictive drug available.  It is a hard habit to break.

However, events in people’s lives overtake football.  Children, poverty, moving out of London and all of these may mean football has to take a backward step in your life.  There are often quotes from the younger posters that say “It will never happen to me, I will always go”, but it is just not true.  There are very few fans who can claim they have supported Millwall religiously year after year after year.  Many of us drift in and out.  I will admit I am one of them at the moment.

However, I have supported my club for years.  I have done my time, and once my kids are at an age where they can come religiously, I will do it again.  However, if we reach the play offs, will I feel bad by trying to get a ticket?  No.  I’ve supported this club through much darker times than now.  I will most likely support this club in future dark times.  Therefore I am entitled to a day out once in a while.  That doesn’t mean I should get the same treatment as current season ticket holders or members, or in fact those currently attending the games week in week out.

I am not the only person who fits this mould, there are 1000’s of us.  That’s why, when we have big games, we draw the support.  Millwall should be doing all they can to tap into this rather than expecting us to simply turn up.  This season the club has done a lot to try and attract fans back with some exceptional offers.  However, I think more should be done to keep season ticket holders returning, boost season ticket sale, and attract a higher rate of less frequent fans.
