Over the last few years, the question has been asked many times. In the last ten years alone Millwall have had no less than 14 managers, 9 of those since 2005 and there have been many changes at boardroom level. In the stands, the uncertainty about the future of Millwall has worried the fans and on the appointment of every new manager, we have wondered if this is finally the manager who will lead the club in the right direction. After the appointments of Nigel Spackman and Willie Donachie and the initial results and interviews, many were heard to say that they had confidence in the manager, they liked what he had to say and what he had already done. That confidence however was only ever short lived.
In October 2007, after the dismissal of Willie Donachie, the club (finally) sought to hire someone with proven experience at League One level and after a month of searching they finally hired Kenny Jackett. Jackett had previously been manager at League One Club Swansea but left in February 2007 after almost three years in charge at the club. Having previously only been at Watford and Swansea (and managed Man City Reserve team for a while), his record is good having won just under half of all the games he has managed.
Since then the optimism that comes with the signing of a new manager has returned to the Den and there have been some hopeful and interesting changes on and off the pitch including arrivals and departures in the playing and backroom staff. Jackett seems to know what he is doing and unlike some of the managers in recent years he has at least some experience of coaching. His reputation has even helped in him in the transfer market and this can only be a good thing for Millwall.
Whether we finally have a manager who can at least give us some stability or that our optimism will wain as we continue to plod along in the bottom half of the first division, only time will tell. But so far, so good.
